It was this charming, rocky landscape of the Altenstein that prompted Duke Georg I to design it as a summer residence. Individual rock cliffs protruded almost vertically and encouraged them to be designed in a garden style.

Bad Salzungen
Museum at the graduation house
In our permanent exhibition you will learn interesting facts about salt and its extraction. The natural brine springs founded the wealth of the town. For centuries the life of the inhabitants was determined by the work in the salt works. The owners of the boiling houses, called "Nappen" here, belonged to the prestigious Pfännerschaft and guided the fortunes of the town. When at the beginning of the 19th century the trip to the bath and to the health resort became fashionable, Bad Salzungen changed from a small country town to a bathing resort.
The healing effect of the brine during inhalation and bathing brought spa guests from all over Europe to the town. In our museum you can see how spa treatment has changed over time. After the tour, you can take a look at the neighboring drilling tower. Here, Bad Salzungen's strong brine is still being extracted today.
The museum garden behind the house houses a small boiling house, which is used for show boiling demonstrations.
