Visitors walk in the footsteps of the Middle Ages when they visit the striking landmark, which proudly overlooks the city's history. Located close to the town hall, the tower offers a fascinating perspective of the city's cultural heritage and is known for its historical ambience. - It is the oldest surviving structure in the city and a former part of the city fortifications. Whether the name comes from the red porphyry tuff or its long use as a dungeon is left to the imagination of the observer. The tower obviously also inspired the imagination of a product designer, who adapted the shape for a well-known washing-up liquid back in 1968. The Red Tower was built at the end of the 12th century and is the city's oldest landmark. The tower owes its name to the red color of the attached brick storey. Over the course of time, the Red Tower has taken on various functions: Keep, part of the old town wall, prison and museum.

The only remaining baroque façade in Chemnitz city center immediately catches the eye among the many different architectural styles. The Old Town Hall was built at the end of the 15th century and has undergone several renovations. The Renaissance portal with the half-figures of Judith and Lucretia on the high tower is a particular gem. It also contains a figurative carillon depicting the history of the town. The High Tower has its origins in the 12th century. Once the permanent residence of the town bailiff, it has been part of the Old Town Hall since the 14th century. In 1986, it was given back its baroque octagonal storey with dome and thus its appearance from 1746. Today, the High Tower houses the permanent exhibition "Towers, tower keepers, tower stories". You can also enjoy a magnificent view of the city center.

Busbahnhof

The bus station in Karl-Marx-Stadt was considered one of the most modern in Europe. The suspended pylon roof built in 1968, which spans an area of over 1,200 m² and offers waiting passengers protection from rain and snow, is truly outstanding. In combination with the Alte Aktienspinnerei behind it, which today houses the university library, the ensemble forms a field of tension between architectural epochs.

There are four fountains by different artists along the Straße der Nationen between Brückenstraße and Theaterplatz. Entitled "Jugend" (1965, Johannes Belz), "Spielende Kinder" (1965, Hanns Diettrich), "Völkerfreundschaft" (1966, Gottfried Kohl) and "Hochzeitsbrunnen" (1980, Peter Fritzsche), these fountains use the means of art to negotiate typical socialist motifs in public spaces.

Art on the building

The variety of artistic forms of expression used during the GDR era is particularly reflected in the art on the building. For example, lead inlays on porphyry were applied to all four residential buildings on the Brückstraßenstumpf. The work "Friedensfahrt" was created by Johannes Belz.

Stadthalle

The multifunctional Stadthalle complex from 1974 includes not only the Stadthalle with its two halls and inviting foyer, but also the Stadthalle Park in front and the 26-storey Congress Hotel. The striking façade made of exposed concrete shapes the image of Chemnitz city center. The Carlowitz Congress Center for large conferences and congresses, which is integrated into the complex, opened at the end of 2020.

Before the building behind the Karl Marx Monument was constructed, the "Rawema" building was built in the same style. The building has since been renovated and now houses a hotel, conference facilities and the Center for Teacher Training at Chemnitz University of Technology. The first floor invites you to stroll around and enjoy the stores.

Rosenhof

Built as an inner-city residential and shopping district, the area of the former Holzmarkt was renamed Rosenhof in 1965. The name was given to the area because of the rose bushes planted from twin towns and different historical regions of the Second World War. They are a symbol of remembrance of the suffering and crimes, but also of reconciliation with the cities destroyed by Hitler's fascism.

Eastern modernism in Chemnitz

With 80 percent of the city centre destroyed by the war, not much was left of its once magnificent architecture, which was characterized above all by prestigious buildings and numerous alleyways. The prompt reconstruction and restoration of some buildings - such as the Siegert House on Marktplatz or the Opera House on Theaterplatz - meant that today countless architectural styles can be found along the Street of Nations. Including, of course, outstanding buildings of Eastern Modernism, i.e. from the very period in which the center was to become a model for other cities: with space, structure, corners and edges. The building in Hoffmannstraße was built in 1912 with luxurious apartments of up to 300 m². From 1919 to 1931, one of the city's most famous sons, the writer Stefan Heym, lived there on the first floor.

Kyffhäuserburg

This ensemble was built in 1909/10 in the spirit of the Wilhelmine era - with references to the Kyffhäuser saga. In the immediate vicinity (Gustav-Adolf-Straße 23 - 25) are the so-called "fairytale houses" in Art Nouveau style.

Helenenhof

The "Helenenhof" residential complex was built in 1926/27 by the cooperative association of craftsmen and architects and is considered a pioneering example of generous building in the 1920s.

Majolica houses

The architect and building contractor Reinhold Siebert erected the so-called "Majolika Houses" in 1897/98 as early Art Nouveau buildings almost at the top of the Kaßberg. These town houses are among the most striking buildings and are a masterpiece of urban architecture.

This building from 1904 is a masterpiece of Gothic façade ornamentation. Artistic glass mosaics, Saxon and Chemnitz coats of arms as well as symbols of the post office and telegraphy refer to the history of this building.

Karl-Schmidt-Rottluff-Gymnasium

Karl-Schmidt-Rottluff-Gymnasium

The former "Royal Grammar School" was built in 1871/72 by district architect Hugo Nauck in the historicist style. Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Stefan Heym and Stephan Hermlin, among others, went to school there. Right next door, you can sit in the "aaltra" bar in the Kulturhaus Arthur in the evening, have a drink and relax.

One of the city's most famous industrialists was Richard Hartmann. He went down in history as the so-called "Locomotive King" and left behind, among other things, the manufacturer's villa built in 1868. This stately symbol of the Hartmann empire served as the director's villa from 1890 to 1930 and has been used as a youth center since 1956.

The museum, which has been based in the impressive Bauhaus-style Stern garages since 2008, is itself a special feature. These historic garages, built in 1928, were among the first high-rise garages in Germany, constructed in the up-and-coming reinforced concrete style. Originally, they offered space for around 300 vehicles, surrounded by petrol stations and repair workshops, and even overnight accommodation for travelers. Over 200 exhibits, including bicycles, motorcycles and automobiles, await you in this unique setting.

The Fritz Heckert area was once a large district with over 90,000 residents and was built with new buildings in the 1970s and 1980s to counteract the housing shortage of the time. Characterized as a working-class district, over half of the residents left the area after the peaceful revolution in 1989. Often the prefab area is labeled as unattractive, yet it offers fantastic views over the entire city and to the Ore Mountains. There are also interesting artistic works from the GDR era to be discovered in various places, such as "Prometheus" by Michael Morgner, "Kosmos" by Heinz Plank and many more. So, although objectively it is a typical East German new development area, there are also some remarkable gems to discover.

Zwickauer Straße in Chemnitz is practically THE industrial route of the city: Here you can experience the history, present and future of industry as if strung together on a chain. The Chemnitz Tram Museum is a particularly authentic place and a must-see for all streetcar fans. The old track layout is reminiscent of the era of the Chemnitz narrow-gauge streetcar. In a carriage hall from 1908 you will find relics from a bygone era and, typical for the Chemnitz machismo, you can touch many things and try them out for yourself. Learn how a streetcar "works" and test for yourself how to operate a master controller or how to use a pay box. For the annual summer festival at the streetcar museum, the historic streetcars are in operation and invite you to take a ride.The former streetcar depot is definitely a site worth coming back to several times, because a lot will develop here in the next few years. It is an intervention area of the Capital of Culture application and will be redesigned and developed into a European cultural campus by 2025.

Berühmtester Kopf und Wahrzeichen

Head, or simply "Nischel".

He always looks a little grim and has seen a lot in the meantime. The Nischl (the Saxon word for "head") is the city's landmark. Between 1971 and 1989, it was mainly the backdrop for socialist celebrations, but today the 40-tonne colossus is Chemnitz's most popular photo motif, a meeting point for skaters and probably the heaviest decoration for concerts at the Kopp.

The highlight of the Schloßviertel is certainly the Schloßberg Museum, perched on the mountain. As a museum of urban history, it is naturally located in a historic building: first a monastery and founding site of the city, then a hunting lodge and today an exhibition space - the history behind the place is at least as exciting as that of the unique collection. From the terrace of the Miramar restaurant up here, you can enjoy a magnificent view over the castle pond and toward the city center. The New Town Hall was spared during the air raids in 1945, but the Old Town Hall and the Jakobikirche behind it were not. The treasures inside the double town hall, such as the famous mural "Work - Prosperity - Beauty" by Max Klinger or the painting "The Weighing Up" by Neo Rauch, can be explored on a tour of the town hall and tower, as can the High Tower. In addition, the town halls each have a carillon, which can be heard at certain times in the city center. The tower carillon in Chemnitz's New Town Hall, also known as the Carillon, is played by hand with its 48 bells. The carillon can be heard on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 am to 10:30 am and on Fridays from 4:30 pm to 5 pm. In the Old Town Hall, on the other hand, there is a figurative carillon with six bronze figures accompanied by 25 bells. The figures symbolize stages in Chemnitz's history and rotate daily at 11 am, 4 pm and 7 pm to the melody of the bells.
