Hanover
The Secret of the Golden Leibniz Biscuit
The famous "Golden Cookie" is "only" gilded and hangs on the outside of the building of the Bahlsen administration from 1911. At the beginning of 2013, the biscuit became famous worldwide when it was stolen in a night and fog operation. The thief had then turned to Bahlsen by mail in a Cookie Monster costume and demanded, among other things, that Bahlsen should donate cookies to the Hanover Children's Hospital on the Bult. Bahlsen then offered to donate 52,000 packs of biscuits to 52 social institutions if the biscuit was returned. The gold-plated biscuit was found hanging from the statue of the Lower Saxony horse in front of the Guelph Castle on 5 February. The unknown perpetrator has not yet been caught. Some time later, the biscuit was hung back in its original place.

Ronnenberg
The buffalo are loose
Animal experiences in the Calenberg region: the water buffalo on the Ihme in Vörie. The sight of a water buffalo is rather rare in our latitudes. But on the Ihme near Vörie, they have been given a regular place - as landscape conservationists, as the exotic cattle help with renaturation, flood protection and species conservation on the Ihme.
The Baumgarte farm in Ronnenberg-Vörie has been breeding rare water buffalo since 2011 as part of a landscape conservation project on an area of around 80,000 square meters. The area to the west of the railroad line is a rainwater retention area, a so-called retention basin. As part of the construction of the Evestorf bypass (B 217), a biotope was created here as a compensatory measure. This is not always the best solution: overgrown vegetation clogged the floodplains and flood protection was no longer guaranteed. Aggressive plants such as land-grass soon dominated the area, reducing biodiversity and leaving little habitat for birds and other animals. Mechanical intervention throughout the year did not seem sensible and was too expensive. The alternative was water buffalo. For some time now, they have been used sporadically but successfully as landscape conservationists, for example in the Steinhuder Meer nature reserve. The frugal and robust cattle have the advantage over their domestic counterparts of being able to eat almost anything and, as water-loving animals, also keep shorelines free of unwanted vegetation.

Switch off from everyday life and switch to discoveries. Smelling, hearing, seeing, feeling and tasting: it's possible in the Park of the Senses. At 19 stations, you can explore the four elements of air, water, fire and earth and experience sensual diversity. The Park of the Senses was laid out for the world exhibition EXPO 2000 according to plans by the Hanoverian garden and landscape architect Hans-Joachim Adam on a former landfill in Laatzen. The 7-hectare site is modelled on a valley basin, which is divided into sub-rooms and crisscrossed by walking paths. A high wall densely covered with wild roses and other woody plants shields the park from the surroundings. Dry stone walls support the embankments. Tree phenomena, stone installations and art objects will amaze you.

Hanover
Off to the forest
The wildlife park with its striking old trees is one of the city's most popular leisure activities. The 112-hectare recreational forest attracts numerous visitors at any time of the year with its wildlife population.
From the very beginning, the focus was on hunting, game, historical forms of silviculture (herding forest, sniping technique) and forest aesthetics, and not, as in many other forests, purely yield-oriented timber production. As a result, old tree populations have been able to develop, which today make a decisive contribution to the fact that forest images of rare beauty and expressiveness can be admired in the zoo.
In addition to fallow deer, the zoo is now home mainly to wild boars and roe deer. Since 1997, the former wild horse enclosure has been home to 10 to 20 red deer. The zoo is also the habitat of numerous bird species and rare bats.
A special highlight, especially for young visitors and families, is the Tiergarten Festival, which takes place every year on the second weekend in October. In this way, the forestry company thanks the children for collecting acorns and chestnuts, which are fed to the animals in winter.
The zoo is open to visitors daily from 7 a.m. until nightfall.

The old post mill from 1701 was taken out of service in 1935 and later moved to the Hermann-Löns-Park. Due to the danger of collapse, the mill was dismantled in 2008. The main cause of the damage was the long idle period of the mill. After a restoration, the mill was rebuilt in 2012. The mill is part of the Lower Saxony Mill Road.

Hanover
"The Three Warm Brothers"
Since June 2013, the three eye-catching power plant towers have been shining in the light of the new permanent illumination in the evening and morning hours. A municipal energy supplier provides the illumination for numerous representative buildings, monuments and art objects - including the combined heat and power plant.
According to a lighting concept developed by the city's lighting team, 72 spotlights with special LED luminaires were installed around the three power plant towers and on their roofs. This illuminates the power plant towers in red-violet, with smooth transitions between the hues. The eye-catching structure adds a whole new touch to Hanover at night and heightens the appeal of the trendy Linden district.
Our tip: Why not take a joint tour of Linden - and enjoy the alternative district culture!

Hanover
Mysterious haven of peace in history
Between 1842 and 1847, the mausoleum was built for Queen Friederike and King Ernst August according to plans by the court architect Laves. The building, which is owned by the Prince of Hanover, is not open to the public for reasons of piety.
The reconstruction of the Leine Castle in 1957 made it necessary to transfer eight more princes to the mausoleum, including the Electress Sophie and George I, King of England. The building is framed by mighty, over 150-year-old pedunculate oaks.

Magnificent landmark
What many visitors to Hanover think is a palace is in fact the New Town Hall: The magnificent Wilhelmine building from 1913 is now one of the landmarks of the Leine metropolis. "Everything paid in cash, Your Majesty!", city director Heinrich Tramm proudly called out to Kaiser Wilhelm II at the inauguration. The city had spent over ten million marks on its representative town hall, built on 6,026 beech stakes.
The New Town Hall is also a place to learn something - the reception hall contains models of the city at different points in its history. You can experience a look behind the scenes on our guided tour!

Hanover
Historic half-timbered backdrop
The historic half-timbered buildings of the old town are among the special sights of the city and decorate the city's parlour. Here, visitors to Hanover can breathe a touch of city history.
Hanover once had a large old town centre with half-timbered houses and narrow streets, some of which date back to the Middle Ages. However, the firestorms of the Second World War left no more than forty houses of the historic old town. Twelve of them were located in the area of Knochenhauerstraße, Kramerstraße and Burgstraße alone. At the end of the fifties, it was decided to demolish the remaining half-timbered houses spread over the city area and move them there. The result is an old town district around the Market Church and the Old Town Hall, which, as a historic island, gives a good impression of what Hanover's old town once looked like. Kramerstraße is also one of the most popular shopping and strolling streets in the city.
