City hall with panorama
Essen City Hall is 106 meters high, and visitors can enjoy an impressive panorama of the city and part of the Ruhr region from the 22nd floor, about 100 meters above the ground.
Ground was broken for the new city hall on July 1, 1975, and the topping-out ceremony was celebrated exactly two years later, on July 1, 1977. The official opening took place with the first council meeting on November 7, 1979. 330,000 cubic meters of enclosed space house 69,000 square meters of office space, a parliamentary area, over 700 parking spaces in a multi-level underground garage, a studio theater and various rooms for technology.
