Where the Türmerstube used to be, you can now eat veal sausages

The striking gate tower at the western end of the market square is Günzburg's landmark. Its lower half is probably the oldest building structure still visible in the upper town. Originally, all floors had a square ground plan and the tower had a pointed roof. However, when the castle was built, Alberto Lucchese decided to redesign the tower, which he thought would better suit the new western view of the city. The tower was the home and workplace of an important servant of the city, the tower keeper. His job was to watch out for fires breaking out and alert the inhabitants. Today, you can eat veal sausages where the tower keeper's room used to be. An association, the Altstadtfreunde Günzburg e. V., has restored and customized the interior of the town tower. Günzburg has a nice story to tell about the green roof tiles: Wealthy towns could once afford to cover the roofs of towers and public buildings with copper sheeting, which acquired a greenish patina over time. From a distance, the green color gave an indication of a town's wealth. As this was not enough for the people of Günzburg, they at least wanted to give the impression of prosperity from afar and glazed the roof tiles.
