A historic transportation hub
The market square was the only street in the upper town that was paved. The construction and constant maintenance of this pavement was associated with costs, and so the town had the right to charge a so-called pavement toll for driving on the square.
This fee varied depending on the size of the wagon and the number of draught animals. The small blue house in front of the Lower Gate was the residence and workplace of the customs collector, who stood under the porch supported by four wooden pillars and collected the toll from the carters.
