The legend about the 1000-year-old rosebush, which can be found at the cathedral apse, goes back to the founding history of the diocese of Hildesheim. In 815, Louis the Pious is said to have forgotten a precious reliquary among the blossoms of a wild dog rose that he had hung there to celebrate a mass. When he returned to retrieve the reliquary, it could no longer be removed from the rosebush. Louis the Pious saw in it a divine sign and had a chapel built on the spot in honor of the Mother of God. So much for the legend. If you want to admire the blossom of the native wild species "Rosa canina L", you should visit the rose bush at the end of May/beginning of June. For a few weeks it can then be seen.
