Visitors can explore the different ecosystems of the oceans, from coral reefs to deep-sea volcanoes and Arctic waters. Through interactive stations, guests can learn more about the importance of the oceans for the climate and people. On June 1, 2024, it's that time of year again: the legendary Extraschicht (or Night of Industrial Culture) brings the industrial heritage cities of the region together for one night and allows visitors a spectrum of cultural experiences. At more than 50 venues in 22 different cities in the Ruhr area, about 500 different events take place in a single night. The special thing about it is that you don't have to choose a venue, but can easily travel back and forth between the various program items with a mobility concept specially designed for the extra shift.

With more than 5,000 marine creatures and over 2 million liters of water, the SEA LIFE Aquarium in Oberhausen is the largest in Germany. Located directly at Centro Oberhausen, you can experience a unique underwater world here, where you can get very close to the animals. You can even touch some of the sea creatures in the touch tank. You also get a very special perspective in the ocean pool, which holds 1.5 million liters of water: a 10 m long glass tunnel takes you right through the middle of the marine diversity, past sharks, rays and turtles. A glass-bottomed boat also takes you on an exciting voyage of discovery over the tropical reef and in the outdoor area, playful otters delight visitors of all ages.

Almost 120 meters above the ground, this historic industrial tower, once Europe's largest gas tank, now offers a unique perspective on the surrounding urban landscape. Inside, a world of spectacular exhibitions awaits, ranging from art to science to the natural wonders of our earth. Each show takes advantage of the impressive dimensions and special atmosphere of this place to create an immersive experience. The panoramic glass elevator takes you under the large dome, where the echo of the room accompanies the exhibitions and creates an almost meditative atmosphere. A place that erases the boundaries between past and future, between industrial culture and natural beauty.

Sorcerer's apprentice / "dancing electricity pylon"

The 35-metre-high, 10-tonne electricity pylon sculpture by Berlin-based artist collective Inges Idee "dances" on a meadow near Haus Ripshorst. It was erected as part of the "Emscherkunst 2013" project, which made various publicly accessible works of art along the Emscher and the Rhine-Herne Canal possible. Its curved shape also traces a human figure and is thus reminiscent of the summoned ghost from Goethe's "Sorcerer's Apprentice", who eludes the apprentice's obedience...

In this historic place, where significant innovations originated, you can walk through Germany's first industrial archaeological park and marvel at the foundation walls of the first hut buildings. The approximately 1,000 square meter excavation area brings the past to life. In addition to the exciting story about the hard lives of the people who worked there, an adventure playground is waiting to be explored by young guests. A visit here is not only a lesson in industrial history, but also a unique adventure that bridges the gap between the past and the present.

The historic Eisenheim estate, one of the oldest workers' housing estates in Germany, impresses with its charming restoration and care. The 38 preserved buildings tell a fascinating story of the Ruhr area. On a stroll through the lovingly designed streets, you will discover countless signs that refer to the history of the settlement. You can still feel the unique charm of the old Ruhr area here. In the past, carrier pigeons were even kept in the estate. A true gem of architectural culture!

The permanent exhibition "Peter Behrens - Art and Technology" is presented in the LVR Industrial Museum in the Peter Behrens Building. Models of important buildings by the German architect can be admired there, as well as objects from the Art Nouveau period and industrial design. There are also regular special exhibitions. The exhibition offers exciting insights into the work of Peter Behrens and the development of industrial culture.
