Saxony owes its pioneering role in the industrialization of Germany to its rich coal deposits. In the listed industrial buildings of a former coal mine, the eventful 800-year history of the extraction and use of this energy source is presented in a vivid, varied, exciting and family-friendly way. From the very beginning, people such as Otto Lilienthal, Karl Marx and Georgius Agricola have shaped the coal industry with their ingenuity and commitment. You can meet them and many others in the museum's Miners' Gallery. Realistic staging and exciting exhibits make a visit to this original industrial site of Saxony's industrial history an adventurous journey of discovery for every generation. Highlights include the impressive demonstration mine, Saxony's largest preserved and demonstratable steam engine and the winding tower, which can be seen from afar.

Explore Europe's largest motorcycle museum, nestled within the historic walls of a Renaissance hunting lodge. Here, where stallions once snorted in front of stately carriages, today the motor horses roar. In addition to the impressive collection of two-wheelers, you can expect exhibitions on hunting animals and ornithology as well as the history of carriages, hunting and castles. Enjoy the view from the Schellenberg or take a ride on the over 100-year-old cable car. It gets adventurous on the summer toboggan run or at a flight demonstration in the falconry.

The wood-panelled restaurant "Der Feengarten" and the adjoining Jägerstube exude dignified cosiness. The high windows light up the room pleasantly. The adjoining summer terrace overlooks the water lily pond. The excellent cuisine has won several awards.

From Altenberg it goes over the Dippoldiswalderstrasse and the Neustadtstrasse in the direction of Geisingberg. Passing the Altenberger Pinge, through the mountain meadows you will reach the 824 m high mountain. In addition to the mountain chalet, the watchtower Louisenturm awaits you here, offering you a view of the Altenberg region. Then it goes steeply downhill towards Geising. Along the historic streets and the Hüttenteich natural pool, you ride up to the Kohlhaukuppe (786 m) - now known as the Knoblauchkuppe ( Knoblauch = garlic ) due to the garlic delicacies in the mountain hut. Along the German-Czech border (Sommerweg) you drive towards Zinnwald-Georgenfeld and cross this small mining village towards the "Lugsteine". From there, the Schneise 30 takes you to the Kahleberg - 905 m above sea level, the highest point in the Eastern Ore Mountains. Here you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views. After a short rest, continue along I-Flügel and Alten Zaunshäuser Weg, back to Altenberg.

Start at Altenberger Bahnhof in the direction of Rehefelder Straße. Shortly afterwards, turn right onto Schellerhauer Weg. Follow this straight ahead, past the campsite and onto Viehtriftweg. Now turn left onto Galgenteichdamm. Continue past the soccer pitch and around the Raupennest health center on the right. Cross Rehefelder Straße and follow Sandbachweg. At the next junction, take a sharp left onto Flemmingweg. After approx. 200 m, continue right, straight ahead to the "Altes Raupennest" forest tavern. The traditional restaurant was built in 1924 by Max Nacke and was family-run for many years. It is now run by the Sender family and every year there are Hutzen evenings with Erzgebirge music. Then it's down the valley via the Raupennestweg back to the town. Follow Rathausstraße and continue along Dippoldiswalder Straße back to the starting point.

After the first stage of the Zschopau Valley Cycle Route winds its way from the source of the Zschopau to the town of the same name, it continues downstream. The second stage is the easier of the two. Highlights of the route are the 9-kilometre-long Kriebstein dam, which is located in the wild and romantic "Middle Zschopau Valley" nature reserve, and Kriebstein Castle, Saxony's most beautiful knight's castle, which is enthroned on a steep rock above the Zschopau. In the Oldtimer Museum Culitzsch, our association Historische Technik Culitzsch e.V. presents our lovingly restored and preserved, diverse collection on a purely voluntary basis. The vehicles on display are presented in an informative way. They have an interesting and lively history and are ready to drive! That is what makes our museum so special and you can feel this flair as soon as you enter the exhibition. We live our hobby with this cultural asset on wheels and tracks and share it with our visitors. As a result, the exhibition is constantly changing. And it continues to grow! Special, rare and unusual items are constantly being added. We gladly accept ideas and suggestions from our visitors and incorporate them into our projects. Since 2004, we have been working every spare minute on our varied museum, which has been open to you since September 2018!

With its imposing silhouette, Wildenfels Castle sits enthroned on a rocky spur above the town. A castle was once built on this site more than 800 years ago, but today the 18th century alterations characterize the historic complex. The small residence of the Counts of Solms is best known for its unique paper and silk wallpaper from the period. The decorations with exotic birds, figures in opulent robes and colorful flowers invite you to dream. The "Blue Salon" and the "Chinese Cabinet" are particularly worth seeing. The impressive wall and ceiling paintings by the former court painter Christian Leberecht Vogel are also well worth a visit. The classicist palace hall, the count's library and the exhibitions in the "Musenhof" and the contemporary gallery round off the visit.

There are few places where the myth and magic of the Ore Mountains come together like at the medieval Scharfenstein Castle - built around 1250 during the colonization of the Ore Mountains after silver ores were discovered there. Scharfenstein Castle is considered to be one of the oldest manor houses in Saxony. The castle has been continuously inhabited and used for more than 750 years, and various construction phases characterize its appearance - the keep, for example, dates back to the medieval "original castle" (around 1250), while the famous portal was only added 400 years later in Renaissance times. Highlights: Christmas and toy museum: historical incense smokers, candle arches and Christmas pyramids from all over the Ore Mountains Castle museum: 800 years of castle history and folk hero Karl Stülpner, the "Robin Hood of the Ore Mountains" "Family-friendly" rating: changing special exhibitions, fairytale and ghost days, medieval village, and much more.

History you can touch and experience

When the Saxon Elector Augustus had Augustusburg Castle built in 1568-1572, the location was well chosen. Visible from afar, the hunting and pleasure palace rose on a 516 m high quartz porphyry cone above the Zschopau valley. Even after more than 450 years, this monumental building has lost none of its charisma. Because of its imposing location, Augustusburg Castle is also known as the "Crown of the Ore Mountains". Due to its monumentality and museums, it is now considered one of the most beautiful Renaissance castles in Central Europe. Facts & highlights Motorcycle museum: the most important and extensive two-wheeler collection in Europe with 175 exhibits (DKW, Auto Union and MZ) Cranach altarpiece in the castle church: valuable painting from the 16th century by Lucas Cranach the Younger Castle museums: permanent exhibition on hunting and castle history, Venus Hall with unique wall painting from the 16th century Carriage museum: stately carriages as well as electoral barouches and carriages (closed from the end of June 2022 due to construction work, expected to reopen in 2024) Well house: second deepest castle well with the oldest preserved driving galley in Saxony and associated UNESCO World Heritage Site Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří since 2019
