History you can touch and experience

When the Saxon Elector Augustus had Augustusburg Castle built in 1568-1572, the location was well chosen. Visible from afar, the hunting and pleasure palace rose on a 516 m high quartz porphyry cone above the Zschopau valley. Even after more than 450 years, this monumental building has lost none of its charisma. Because of its imposing location, Augustusburg Castle is also known as the "Crown of the Ore Mountains". Due to its monumentality and museums, it is now considered one of the most beautiful Renaissance castles in Central Europe.
