Völklingen
Unique symbiosis of nature and industry
Once upon a time, one of the hardest jobs was done in this area of the Völklingen Ironworks – today it is a 33,000 square metre garden that attracts many visitors. In the former coking plant, coke was produced for the production of pig iron. The workers were exposed to a lot of heat, gas and the vagaries of the weather. When the work there was stopped, animals and plants were allowed to develop freely. Since 2009, this area has been open to visitors and offers a unique experience of industrial culture, nature and art. The colourful variety of plants contrasts with the rust-brown steel walls of the blast furnaces. Various eventful paths lead past pleasant-smelling roses, butterfly lilacs and many other types of flowers. There are also some animal species to see such as geese, lizards, peacocks and many more.
