UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site Völklingen Ironworks
The World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks is a globally significant industrial monument and a fascinating cultural venue with top-class exhibitions, concerts and events. In 1994, the Völklingen Ironworks became the first industrial site from the heyday of high industrialization to be declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. An important step for UNESCO: industrial culture is recognized as an important heritage of mankind. And an important step for Völklingen and the Saarland: For more than a century, the Völklingen Ironworks has shaped the work and lives of many thousands of people in the region. Through the World Cultural Heritage Site, this culture receives appropriate recognition. The circular route through the UNESCO World Heritage Site, with 7,000 meters of well-signposted paths, takes two to three hours. The multimedia introduction in the sinter plant sends visitors on a journey through time from the beginnings of the Völklingen Ironworks to the present day. From the roof of the ore hall, the view opens up over the town of Völklingen and the active Saarstahl plant. Through the Möllerhalle, the smelter's former raw materials warehouse, the tour continues to the imposing blast furnaces. The ascent to the blast furnace platform at a height of 27 meters is an unforgettable experience. The path continues to the coking plant, where the coal was processed into coke. Here, "Paradise" offers a unique dialogue of industrial culture, nature and art. Where once fire and dust ruled, extraordinary plants now grow. According to the plans of Catherina Countess Bernadotte from the island of Mainau, a landscape garden of 33,000 m² was created with twelve staged garden rooms and the installations of the "UrbanArt Biennale®". The ScienceCenter Ferrodrom® on the lower level of the Möllerhalle is the first ScienceCenter in the SaarLorLux region: Visitors are immersed in the fascinating world of iron and the powerful interplay of fire, water, earth and air, the elements of iron production. 100 exciting experimentation and hands-on stations ensure that there is never a dull moment. Ferrodrom® is the exciting cosmos of iron and steel at the World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks. The blower hall is reached via the coal track and the blower walkway. The blower machines, colossuses of iron and steel, generated the wind that was blown into the blast furnaces. The "UNESCO Visitor Center" opens up a new visitor area in the sinter plant. Covering an area of around 1,400 m², the "UNESCO VisitorCenter" offers a programmatic introduction to the World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks. Topics include UNESCO's sustainability ideals, the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH), the history of the Völklingen Ironworks, or the cultural position of the Völklingen Ironworks as museum after museum. The most spectacular exhibit is a large interactive functional model that illustrates the technical plant and production processes at the Völklingen Ironworks. Current exhibitions: Until 03.09.23: "JULIAN ROSEFELDT. WHEN WE ARE GONE" is a synthesis of the arts consisting of film, dance, text and music in an exemplary moment and monument of the Anthropocene: a show of works as a retrospective of history and the present, whose sensual power and mental depth of focus will both irritate and fascinate visitors. Saarbrücker Kasematten
    Saarbrücken
    Saarbrücken casemates
14 meters below the Schlossplatz, you will be amazed by well-preserved relics of earlier castle and palace complexes of the Saarbrücken Schlossfelsen, the 500-year-old casemates and the mighty underground bastion. The Aufbaugesellschaft Saarbrücker Schloss uncovered this impressive complex between 2003 and 2007 and staged it as an underground museum accessible from the Historisches Museum Saar. From early medieval castle to baroque palace Saarbrücken Castle was first mentioned in a document in 999 under the name "Castellum Sarabruca". Since the early 12th century, the seat of the Counts of Saarbrücken, who continuously expanded the castle, was located on this site. From 1602 to 1617 the castle buildings were demolished and a Renaissance castle was built within the fortified enclosure. This castle was also dismantled in the early 18th century and replaced by a Baroque-style residential castle. Living history Since 2006, visitors have been able to descend a staircase to the remains of the medieval castle complex in a section of the Saar Historical Museum. In addition to the 13th-century Red Tower, visitors can see a late medieval wall section and the 16th-century southeast bastion projecting into the moat, with a cistern enclosed within. Passing an original medieval shooting chamber (15th century), visitors cross a footbridge into the moat and look up at the mighty southwest bastion of the Renaissance castle with its embrasures. At various locations in the moat and in the casemates, audio play scenes, supported by an appealing light show, provide information, for example, about the everyday life of the castle garrison. Replicas of a hooked rifle and a gun on a fortress mount illustrate the military function of the fortifications. Various information modules explain the historical context.

Experienced swimmers can prove their skills in the whitewater channel or the current channel. The very brave can get a special thrill on the suspension bridge at dizzying heights and let the fresh air blow around their noses. In summer, when the weather is fine, the segments of the indoor roof are opened to create a real open-air pool feeling. The newly designed Cally KinderLand by Cally Krake awaits the kids. A play pool with lots of action-packed attractions to romp around and join in invites the youngest ones to have fun in the water. Colorful play tables are ready for little water explorers. In between, Cally and his friends splash water from numerous fountains, while they can race each other down the wave slide. The slides are undoubtedly considered the highlight at Calypso. Here you can feel the pure power of water, especially in the AdrenaLoop, where your pulse skyrockets and your body shoots down at breakneck speed. The slide adventure already begins in the transparent start capsule when the countdown starts. 3 - 2 - 1: If the trap door then opens, it goes ten meters deep into nothingness. This is followed by a loop through which you hurtle at up to 55 kilometers per hour. With maximum acceleration during the spectacular slide, you feel like you're on a roller coaster. The individual time of each person is automatically recorded thanks to integrated measurement. I wonder who is the fastest here? But swimmers who enjoy doing their laps will not miss out in the Calypso either. In the 25-meter sports pool, the snorkeling reef under water at a depth of around 3.5 meters is something very special. "Fire and ice" in the sauna paradise Even when it's wet and cold outside: You can tank up on warmth in the sauna. The sauna area has everything to offer that body and mind need to relax deeply, to relieve stress, to forget worries. The Calypso sauna world offers a contrast to the colorful bathing world. Here the motto is: escape from everyday life in Nordic coziness. Simply leave the hectic everyday life behind. The sauna guest is invited to dive into a legendary world and enjoy the magic of fire and ice in the middle of Saarbrücken. The highlight is the Stollensauna - a successful synthesis of home, region and innovation. Everyone who has ever been in a mine tunnel remembers this formative time in the Saarland. Guests enter the world of past tradition via a gallery entrance. Natural materials, light, various effects and small details create a real underground flair. Something very special is the plunge pool, an original lorry with atmospheric lighting. No less impressive is the shower area of the mine sauna, called "Waschkaue", which includes a waterfall shower. The "Lambestubb" completes the special sauna, which is only available at Calypso. But that's not all. The varied sauna landscape with seven different saunas offers every fan of sauna culture the right sweating experience. After an infusion with temperatures of up to 90 degrees Celsius and the soothing cool-down, you are welcomed by a rest area themed after the mine sauna. Rusty-looking lamps and grilles, old heavy wooden beams and a unique flair of industrial and modern design bring back memories of old times and impressions of a bygone world. After a variety of themed infusions, you can rediscover your inner balance here. With lovingly designed illumination, comfortable loungers invite you to snooze - a quiet spot for a little nap between sauna sessions.
