UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site Völklingen Ironworks

The World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks is a globally significant industrial monument and a fascinating cultural venue with top-class exhibitions, concerts and events. In 1994, the Völklingen Ironworks became the first industrial site from the heyday of high industrialization to be declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. An important step for UNESCO: industrial culture is recognized as an important heritage of mankind. And an important step for Völklingen and the Saarland: For more than a century, the Völklingen Ironworks has shaped the work and lives of many thousands of people in the region. Through the World Cultural Heritage Site, this culture receives appropriate recognition. The circular route through the UNESCO World Heritage Site, with 7,000 meters of well-signposted paths, takes two to three hours. The multimedia introduction in the sinter plant sends visitors on a journey through time from the beginnings of the Völklingen Ironworks to the present day. From the roof of the ore hall, the view opens up over the town of Völklingen and the active Saarstahl plant. Through the Möllerhalle, the smelter's former raw materials warehouse, the tour continues to the imposing blast furnaces. The ascent to the blast furnace platform at a height of 27 meters is an unforgettable experience. The path continues to the coking plant, where the coal was processed into coke. Here, "Paradise" offers a unique dialogue of industrial culture, nature and art. Where once fire and dust ruled, extraordinary plants now grow. According to the plans of Catherina Countess Bernadotte from the island of Mainau, a landscape garden of 33,000 m² was created with twelve staged garden rooms and the installations of the "UrbanArt Biennale®". The ScienceCenter Ferrodrom® on the lower level of the Möllerhalle is the first ScienceCenter in the SaarLorLux region: Visitors are immersed in the fascinating world of iron and the powerful interplay of fire, water, earth and air, the elements of iron production. 100 exciting experimentation and hands-on stations ensure that there is never a dull moment. Ferrodrom® is the exciting cosmos of iron and steel at the World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks. The blower hall is reached via the coal track and the blower walkway. The blower machines, colossuses of iron and steel, generated the wind that was blown into the blast furnaces. The "UNESCO Visitor Center" opens up a new visitor area in the sinter plant. Covering an area of around 1,400 m², the "UNESCO VisitorCenter" offers a programmatic introduction to the World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks. Topics include UNESCO's sustainability ideals, the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH), the history of the Völklingen Ironworks, or the cultural position of the Völklingen Ironworks as museum after museum. The most spectacular exhibit is a large interactive functional model that illustrates the technical plant and production processes at the Völklingen Ironworks. Current exhibitions: Until 03.09.23: "JULIAN ROSEFELDT. WHEN WE ARE GONE" is a synthesis of the arts consisting of film, dance, text and music in an exemplary moment and monument of the Anthropocene: a show of works as a retrospective of history and the present, whose sensual power and mental depth of focus will both irritate and fascinate visitors.
