The World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks is a globally significant industrial monument and a fascinating cultural venue with top-class exhibitions, concerts and events. In 1994, the Völklingen Ironworks became the first industrial site from the heyday of high industrialization to be declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. An important step for UNESCO: industrial culture is recognized as an important heritage of mankind. And an important step for Völklingen and the Saarland: For more than a century, the Völklingen Ironworks has shaped the work and lives of many thousands of people in the region. Through the World Cultural Heritage Site, this culture receives appropriate recognition. The circular route through the UNESCO World Heritage Site, with 7,000 meters of well-signposted paths, takes two to three hours. The multimedia introduction in the sinter plant sends visitors on a journey through time from the beginnings of the Völklingen Ironworks to the present day. From the roof of the ore hall, the view opens up over the town of Völklingen and the active Saarstahl plant. Through the Möllerhalle, the smelter's former raw materials warehouse, the tour continues to the imposing blast furnaces. The ascent to the blast furnace platform at a height of 27 meters is an unforgettable experience. The path continues to the coking plant, where the coal was processed into coke.
