Augsburg
Oldest social housing estate in the world
The oldest surviving social housing estate in the world was founded by Jakob Fugger "the Rich" in 1521. Today, around 150 needy Catholic citizens of Augsburg live there. Fuggeri residents pay an annual (cold) rent of 0.88 euros for one of the 60 square meter apartments. In return, they are expected to say three prayers a day for the founder and the founder's family. The 67 houses, each with two apartments, are grouped around the eight alleys of the walled terraced housing estate, the gates of which are locked at night. After its destruction in 1944, the Fuggerei was immediately rebuilt and even extended once again. Several museums "tell" the story of the Fuggerei and its inhabitants: a memorial to the founder stands in the green area of the social housing estate. An inscription plaque commemorates the most prominent resident of the Fuggerei - Franz Mozart. The master bricklayer who died here in 1694 was the great-grandfather of Wolfgang Amadé Mozart.

Augsburg
An eventful journey through time
The Fugger and Welser Experience Museum offers special tours that make history accessible in a special way. During a tour, visitors have the opportunity to feel historical garments and fabrics, while sighted people can recreate the experience of the visually impaired by wearing dark glasses. This enables a deeper understanding of the strict dress code of the early modern era.
Another guided tour sheds light on the history of women in the influential Fugger and Welser families. You can also learn more about the relationship between a powerful emperor and a successful merchant and how they benefited from each other.
