Holstein stairs

Wuppertal, the city of stairs! The hilly location means that you will always come across connecting staircases between the houses, which connect entire districts with each other. One highlight is the Holsteiner Treppe, which has connected the Gathe with Holsteiner Straße on the Engelnberg since 1900. In the course of the Regionale 2006, the staircase was redesigned by the artist couple Horst Gläsker and Margret Masuch-Gläsker and a dreary staircase became a staircase like life. Divided into nine sections, analogous to the paragraphs of the staircase, each of the 112 steps was colorfully designed. Each step has a word that is in the complementary color to the background. The artist calls the work "Scala of feelings". Since the steps were designed with acrylic paint, they wear out over time, but local residents make sure to renew them regularly. In 2016, street artist Martin Heuwold (MEGX), who also designed the Lego Bridge and Lego Bridge 2.0, added a tree motif to the staircase on the gable wall of Holsteiner Straße 26.
