Von der Heydt-Museum

Von der Heydt Museum

Looking at a real Picasso, Monet or Cézanne in peace? You don't have to travel to Paris or London for that. The Von-der-Heydt Museum in the center of Wuppertal enjoys an excellent international reputation. In the venerable rooms, the paintings, sculptures and graphics come into their own. With world-famous works of Dutch painting and the 19th century, with paintings by Claude Monet, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Otto Dix, Pablo Picasso and Francis Bacon, the Von der Heydt Museum is one of the most important, internationally renowned art institutes in Germany. The museum's collection includes art from the 16th century to the present, with Impressionism, Expressionism and the 1920s forming the focal points. Around 2200 high-caliber paintings, 500 sculptures and 30,000 graphic sheets are part of the collection, which is presented in changing major exhibitions. The museum is located in the center of Wuppertal-Elberfeld. If the museum today has one of the richest collections in Germany, it is primarily thanks to the citizens of Wuppertal and their artistic and public spirit. They regularly donated and endowed high-caliber works to the museum. Particularly noteworthy as donors and patrons are the Elberfeld banker August von der Heydt (1851-1929) and his son Eduard (1882-1964), after whom the museum is named today. Founded in 1902, the museum celebrated its 120th birthday in 2022.
