The perfect place for smugglers

Numerous well-hidden smugglers' trails criss-crossed the deserted landscape. Coffee and cigarettes were the main items smuggled. Today, only around 50 Scottish Highland cattle are still hiding behind the bushes in the Witte Venn. The cross-border area has been a nature reserve since 1939.
