Secrets of cabbage
Wesselburen is considered the cradle of cabbage cultivation. In 1889, the gardener Eduard Laß from Wesselburen experimented with cabbage cultivation for the first time in Dithmarschen. As the largest contiguous cabbage-growing area in Europe today, more than 90 million cabbages are harvested annually in Dithmarschen on over 2,800 hectares. In the building of the former sugar and former sauerkraut factory, today's "KOHLosseum" with the farmers' market, the sauerkraut workshop and the cabbage museum is located in the historic walls from the Wilhelminian style. Here, a lot revolves around the topic of health and everything positive about the vitamin- and mineral-rich cabbage vegetable. In addition, a lively exhibition shows much of rural life as well as cultivation methods and old machines. The ceremony of the gentle production of organic sauerkraut has long since become an institution and is known in the media and television, which makes the visit a unique experience.
