Moorland landscape up close

A unique biotope awaits nature enthusiasts in the extensive raised bog. Rare plants and animal species can be discovered on the boardwalk, while the silence and vastness of the moor provide relaxing moments. The Lichtenmoor is a degenerated raised bog measuring around 10 x 10 km between Heemsen and Steimbke. The peat-covered moorland is partly used for agriculture. There is a nature reserve of around 240 hectares inside, as the Lichtenmoor is an important breeding and resting area for birds (including cranes). Incidentally, a large wolf is known as the Lichtenmoor Strangler, which is said to have killed numerous domestic and wild animals around the Lichtenmoor in 1948. There is an exhibition about the "strangler" in the Rodewald local history museum.
