The imposing Eider barrage in Wesselburenerkoog, one of the largest coastal protection structures in Europe, attracts tourists and locals alike. It ensures shipping traffic between the Eider and the North Sea, drains the marsh and protects against storm surges. Five huge double gates and a 25-metre-long lock with bascule bridge regulate the flow of water and ship traffic.
