Eider-Sperrwerk
Discover fascinating coastal protection technology
The imposing Eider barrage in Wesselburenerkoog, one of the largest coastal protection structures in Europe, attracts tourists and locals alike. It ensures shipping traffic between the Eider and the North Sea, drains the marsh and protects against storm surges. Five huge double gates and a 25-metre-long lock with bascule bridge regulate the flow of water and ship traffic. Excursions to the seals and a tour with the restaurant ship through the Eider landscape start from here. The fascinating technology, the harbour and the panoramic view attract countless guests all year round.Visitors can explore the barrage on their own and study the information boards on the parking lot of the Dithmarschen side. The area is not barrier-free.
