Moorbahn Uchte-Essern

Enjoy experiencing nature far away from any everyday noises on the trail of the oldest bog corpse in Lower Saxony. With a length of almost 10 km, the Moorbahn in the Great Moor has by far the longest network of similar railways in Lower Saxony. A trolley is equipped for the disabled. Four lovingly restored original light railway locomotives serve as traction units. The Moorbahn departs from its station in the Diepenau district of Essern at the "Tor zum Moor" information centre. Breaks will be taken at several stops and you will learn a lot about nature during the tour, peat extraction a hundred years ago, how modern peat extraction is carried out today and what is being done to rewet the moor. Back at the train station in Essern, a children's playground invites your little ones to linger, while you can make yourself comfortable with coffee and cake in the "Altes Torfwerk" café. In the "Gateway to the Moor" there is also the information centre with an exhibition on the subject of moor and peat and about our "Moora". In the year 2000, Moora, "the girl from the moor", was found. It turned out to be the oldest bog body in Lower Saxony. During the season, special trips are offered, such as after-work tours, crane rides and the popular Halloween ride.
