Botanical garden

A garden dream in the heart of the city The Botanical Garden of Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg was established in 1698 and was the first of its kind in what was then Prussia. As a medicinal plant garden, it was once intended for the education of medical students. Today, the nearly five-hectare site is home to some 12,000 plant species, of which about 6,000 grow in the greenhouses. The thematically organized outdoor plant collection, the garden with alpine plants, and the forest and steppe areas represent a cross-section of plant geography worldwide. The Botanical Garden opens from the beginning of May to the end of October. In winter, the garden is not open to the public, as many plants are stored in the greenhouses for protection.
