You can find them everywhere, fleeing from mussel farms, the Pacific oyster has been occupying the North German Wadden Sea for about 30 years. Further out in the mudflats, it overgrows mussel beds and turns them into oyster reefs. It has its charm and beauty to watch the water filtering of oysters in the sunlight.

The old foundation is close to the fairway. You can get there from Eckwarder Altendeich, about 2.5 km long. Do you like the peace and quiet and are you open to the constant new? Especially in the morning or evening, the light always brings a special atmosphere. Nobody knows exactly what the origin of the foundation is. It is also called the "Dead Man". Some people think it's an old seamark, others think it's from the war and has something to do with ammunition. You can see the foundation as an inconspicuous black line in the mudflats. Opposite is the entrance to the naval port in Wilhelmshaven. From Fundament you have a wide view of the Jade Bay. On the horizon you can see the upper light of Preußeneck, Tossens can also be seen. The hike goes through sand mudflats and through light mudflats. The tour is something for explorers and people who want to discover the mudflats away from the tourist crowd. We cross tidal channels and at the beginning it is a bit muddy. A bit unusual for mudflat beginners, but doable.

Never start a mudflat hike when the water is rising. A basic rule that everyone should follow. The tides of the seas, the presence of ebb and flow are among the greatest natural wonders of the earth. The moon has a gravitational pull on Earth. The moving water reacts by flowing out to the flood mountain........ Questions, how does ebb and flow occur? What is spring tide or nipp tide? What is the tidal range? All this is answered on the mudflat hike. It is impressive to experience the rising water. A lasting memory for every participant.

Whether in Eckwarderhörne or in Tossens, you can see a prominent point in the direction of the North Sea. Many people ask again and again, what is it? The answer: well the Butjenter plug! The water runs in there. But it is actually an old foundation from 1939, on which stood the old Sengwarden upper light, i.e. a sea mark. In the course of the development of the waterways in the Jade Bay, it was dismantled and the foundation remained. If conditions are favourable, you can also hike there. It goes through tidal channels and partly knee-deep silt. A hike with a small group, max. 10 people. The route is a good 4 km long and you absolutely need good shoes, because we have to go through an oyster reef. You should allow a good 3 hours in terms of time.

Fancy a nice tour, far out on the Jade fairway? There we discover starfish and many other animals again and again. We start in Tossens, in the direction of the lighthouse (Unterfeuer Tossens). In between we cross 2 tidal creeks and a few mud spots. After that, it's pretty easy on Sandwatts up to the tower. Here we take a short break. Quite interesting for geocachers (GC3H0XY). From here we can observe seals well through binoculars. We continue to the Jade fairway, Wilhelmshaven now seems very close to us. Here you can unwind, enjoy the peace and quiet. In the shallow water we often find starfish, razor clams and many other interesting animals. And then we hike along the tidal channel to the oyster bank before we reach Tossens again after a good 3 hours.

With a practiced eye, you can see the seal bank from the dike and with a clear view. When the water runs out, a large sandbank emerges. Several animals gather there to rest. From the end of May until August, the seals give birth to their young here, suckle them and soak up plenty of sun for their moulting. In front of it is a tidal creek, the border to the rest zone, so that the seals can raise their young undisturbed. The distance is large enough, but you can still observe them well in their natural environment. The tidal creek behind it is navigable, with a bit of luck a shrimp cutter will pass by, on its way to the North Sea. Footwear is mandatory: Old sneakers, mudflats that fit well. Boots are no good. Adapt clothing to the weather. Think about sun protection, drinking, maybe eating some fresh fruit or something else. In winter: dress warmly, waders would be quite good or like me, short and neoprene shoes. Gloves and hat.

The family hike is for all ages. Many new impressions. Feeling the mudflats is still unusual for some. Children have a thousand questions, want to discover, touch and feel. They need time. With us, the children set the pace and everyone can decide for themselves how far they go. We leave the mudflat hike open and don't look at the clock all the time. This way there is no time pressure and you can enjoy the hike. If a dog belongs to your family, you can take it with you on a leash. Just the right thing for big, small and even for the little ones.
