Cottbus
Cultural heritage of the Sorbs
The Wendish Museum/Serbski muzej, which opened in Cottbus' old town in 1994, has been inviting visitors again since the fall of 2020, following extensive renovation of the building. A modern permanent exhibition as well as changing thematic special exhibitions convey facts and knowledge about faith and religion, language and literature, folk art and fine arts, customs and costumes, festivals and everyday life, music and stage art as well as about the cultivation of the cultural heritage of the autochthonous Sorbian/Wendish people in Lower Lusatia in the past and present.
The Wendish Museum/Serbski muzej is part of the Cottbus Municipal Collections and is financed by the City of Cottbus/Chóśebuz and the Foundation for the Sorbian People. It pays attention to consistent Lower Sorbian-German bilingualism and does its part to preserve the Lower Sorbian/Wendish language, which is acutely threatened with extinction.
