City gate & prison
To protect the medieval bridge, the Rheintorturm was built around 1200 as the northern city gate. Before that, a Baroque Nepomuk sculpture stood here. Downstream from the Rhine, the Powder Tower was added in the first third of the 14th century as a northwestern cornerstone of the city fortifications. The Powder Tower was also used as a municipal prison for a time.
