Museum für Vor- und Frühgeschichte
Time travel through human history
The Museum of Prehistory and Early History in Saarbrücken is the archaeological showcase of the Saarland. It presents finds from all epochs of human cultural development from the Stone Age to the early Middle Ages, from hand axes to filigree gold jewellery. Its highlights include the original finds from the famous Celtic princess tomb of Reinheim as well as numerous valuable artefacts from Roman times, such as the equestrian mask of Reinheim, the genius of Schwarzenacker and the colourful murals with circus scenes from the villa of Mechern. Current finds from recent excavations are constantly expanding the exhibition. Changing special exhibitions also complement the offer. Under the roof of the museum is also the Old Collection of the Saarland Museum with numerous works by international and regional artists from the 16th to 19th centuries. In the neighbouring castle church, the museum presents finds from churches and monasteries and the monumental grave monuments of the ruling house of Nassau-Saarbrücken.
