View over the red brick roofs
The Kalkberg in Lüneburg is more than just a mountain made of plaster. It is a witness to bygone eras, a natural paradise and a vantage point all in one. In the past, gypsum was mined here for the entire northern German region and a castle stood here until the 14th century, from which the principality of Lüneburg-Braunschweig was ruled.
Today, the Kalkberg is a nature reserve and a place to take a deep breath. Here you can walk on a circular path through wet meadows and forests and discover rare plant species. The climb up the Kalkberg is easy and worth it just for the breathtaking view of Lüneburg's old town.
Whether at sunrise or sunset, the sight is always fascinating. Visitors can experience history and nature at the same time here and learn how important the preservation of natural spaces is in our modern world.
