Fugger houses and Damenhof

The Fugger Houses on Maximilianstrasse - an early secular building of the German Renaissance - were built by the Augsburg merchant and mining entrepreneur Jakob Fugger "the Rich" from 1512 to 1515. Further wings were built later. The Damenhof, the most beautiful of the four inner courtyards of the city palace, was also built by 1515. Three of these Renaissance-style courtyards are open to the public. Emperors of the House of Habsburg stayed in the Fugger houses several times. The Swedish King Gustav II Adolf resided here during the Thirty Years' War, Mozart gave a legendary concert in 1777. In 1518, the disputes between Martin Luther and Cardinal Cajetan took place here.
