Jean-Lurçat-Museum Eppelborn

Admire a unique art facility

The museum, which is based in Eppelborn, is the only art institution in Germany dedicated exclusively to the work of Jean Lurçat. It shows a cross-section of the artist's artistic work on approx. 250 m² in the former "girls' vocational school". Ceramics, tapestries, watercolours, oil paintings, lithographs from the artist's various creative periods can be admired here.  Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse were encouraged by him to deal with the art of tapestry, the art of tapestry — Jean Lurçat. The artist Jean Lurçat was born in 1892 in the Vosges town of Bruyères. His art has many facets: As a painter, he turned to Cubism after his early work, which was influenced by Impressionism. Above all, however, he is considered the most important contemporary representative of tapestry, which he revived through his enthusiasm, inspiration and joy of creation in close cooperation with the Aubusson manufactory in central France. In Aubusson, he created his first tapestry in 1933. However, his first important exhibitions took place in Paris in 1922 and in New York in 1928. He was in close contact with famous poets such as Hermann Hesse and Rainer Maria Rilke. During World War II, he was an active member of the Resistance. In the 1950s, Jean Lurçat was one of Europe's best-known contemporary artists.
