Lessingtheater Wolfenbüttel

Guest performance theater in historical ambience

Wolfenbüttel has a theater tradition that goes back more than 400 years. In the 16th century, Duke Heinrich-Julius founded Germany's first standing theater in Wolfenbüttel Castle - at a time when there were no permanent theaters in Germany. The Lessingtheater, built in 1909 by Otto Rasche and Otto Kratzsch, is built in a reduced Art Nouveau style and is one of the most beautiful houses in northern Germany. In 2007, the theater was closed due to non-compliance with fire protection regulations. From 2010 to 2013, the architectural firm Struhk from Braunschweig implemented a design by Springer-Architekten, Berlin. Two winter gardens were added to the building, which give the existing building a reference to the outside and can be used for smaller events and break catering. The technical and stage equipment was completely renewed and brought up to date, as was the catering area. To achieve more comfortable seating, the existing 700 seats were reduced to 485. The sanitary and checkroom facilities have been relocated to the newly excavated basement. The theater is now established as a "cultural beacon" and communicative center in the city and the region with a clear profile. It is a place where people from the city and the region enjoy going without fear of thresholds, where they can experience new things, try things out for themselves and actively participate. Raise the curtain and clear the stage for the Lessingtheater Wolfenbüttel!
