Standing in front of the gate tower, you might ask yourself how a remarkable castle has become a modern museum. Or you can conquer the Burgraben without questions, with mere curiosity, and go in search of clues. The Moritzburg was once the residence of the Archbishops of Magdeburg, but during the Thirty Years' War it had to endure fires and sieges, only a ruin remained. As an imposing contemporary witness made of quarry stones, it now rises in the middle of modern city alleys and houses the Art Museum of the State of Saxony-Anhalt. Exciting architecture provides the framework for important sculptures, paintings and prints along the art history of the 20th century.

If you approach the cathedral through the alleys on the side of Kleine Ulrichstraße, you will first see the round gables, which stretch towards the sky like flower petals. Two or three more steps further and the cathedral is completely revealed. He rests confidently in his bright robe. Knows what it was and what it is: In the 13th century, Dominican monks began building the original monastery church. Around 1523, Cardinal Albrecht elevated it to the status of a collegiate church. Today, the cathedral is one of the oldest church buildings in Halle (Saale) and, together with the cathedral square, invites you to organ concerts and contemplative breaks. On the occasion of the 300th birthday of Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, his former home in Große Klausstraße in Halle was structurally restored. The home of Johann Sebastian Bach's eldest son is now home to a music museum that takes you on a chronological journey through the city's musical history. In addition to Bach, the focus is on composers such as Scheidt, Reichardt and Loewe. Wilhelm Friedemann was one of the organ virtuosos of his time. The undoubtedly musically talented first-born son was subject to particularly high expectations from his parents, and the shadow of his apparently overpowering father had a strong influence on his life.

Francke Foundations

The Francke Foundations are a place of learning and togetherness steeped in history. In 1698, August Hermann Francke founded a school for the poor here. From his good deed and his pietistic values grew a school town in the city center of Halle (Saale). More than 50 educational institutions are gathered here: with a backdrop library, plant garden and city choir, they create a unique cultural and scientific institution of European standing. The historic orphanage is still the heart of the foundations: special and permanent exhibitions can be discovered here, treasures can be admired in the Chamber of Art and Natural History and festivals can be celebrated.

The patrician house was built around 1600 as an eye-catcher with other town houses on the market square in Halle (Saale). With its red façade and stair tower in the inner courtyard, the Marktschlösschen is a jewel in the Renaissance style. Over the centuries, it has been the noble home of salt counts, merchants and a pharmacist. Rebuilt several times, it housed the pharmacy "Zum Goldenen Löwen" as well as a coffee house, a hardware store, the Ratsschenke and later the historical instruments of the Handel House. Today, the building, which is a listed building, combines the tourist information office with the hallesaale* and university shop.

To the west of the city centre rises the academic centre of Halle (Saale): Universitätsplatz. Majestic lion sculptures are enthroned here, which gave its name to the first building on the square: the Lion Building and main building of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. Here today is the University Museum, which has more to say about one of the oldest German universities. Over time, other buildings were built, including the Juridicum, Robertinum and the modern Audimax. Not only for many students, the square is a popular and sociable center of life. The extensive collection with more than 16 million finds includes numerous pieces of European-wide rank, some even of world renown, such as the famous "Nebra Sky Disk", which is the oldest concrete representation of cosmic phenomena and is included in the UNESCO document heritage Memory of the World. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the Landesmuseum regularly presents major special exhibitions.
