Jena
Green oasis in the middle of the city
The botanical garden, which has existed since 1586 and is closely associated with Goethe, is home to around 10,000 plant species from various vegetation units around the world on an area of 4.5 hectares. Highlights include an arboretum with 900 species of trees and shrubs, an alpinum with 2,500 species and greenhouses in which the tropical to subtropical plant world shines in all its glory. Here you will find cacti, succulents, palms and even the impressive Amazonian giant water lily Victoria. The Botanical Garden is an institution of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and is centrally located in the city.
