Where a swing bridge once crossed the Kiel Canal, there is now a pedestrian tunnel in the immediate vicinity. At the end of the 1950s, the swing bridge could no longer cope with the growing ship and road traffic. Within a few years, the swing bridge became a real traffic obstacle, as it was open more often than closed. At peak times, motorized traffic in the south came to a standstill until just before Jevenstedt, and in the north, cars lined up as far as the Rüdel barracks (later Feldwebel Schmidt barracks), with traffic routing right through Rendsburg.
