The pilot station consists of a waiting room, a common room, a control center with radio and radar, and a jetty. Here you can watch the pilots on the passing ships take turns on the fly during the journey. For the changeover, a pilot boat approaches the moving ship and hands over a new pilot, who climbs on board via a rope ladder, the so-called pilot ladder. The previous pilot then disembarks and is brought ashore by the pilot boat. The pilot transfer station was previously located in Nübbel, but today it is on the other side of the canal in Rüstenbergen. The NordArt in particular attracts tens of thousands of visitors every summer. It is one of the largest annual exhibitions of contemporary art in Europe. This also includes the sculpture park embedded in a large park.

The position of the center is 54 degrees, 11 minutes and 7.9353 seconds north latitude, 9 degrees, 49 minutes and 19.5452 seconds east longitude. Within a few years, the swing bridge became a real traffic obstacle, as it was open more often than closed. At peak times, motorized traffic in the south came to a standstill until just before Jevenstedt, and in the north, cars lined up as far as the Rüdel barracks (later Feldwebel Schmidt barracks), with traffic routing right through Rendsburg.

Between Rendsburg and Kiel, directly on the Kiel Canal, lies the Steinwehr estate.
