Königswinter
Bergu vs. Naturschutz
Directly below the Hühnerberg you will find a special vantage point that shows you the Siebengebirge from a new side. From here you have a fantastic view of the Löwenburg and the Oelberg, which characterize the landscape.
The Hühnerberg itself, the last still active basalt quarry in the Siebengebirge, is an impressive terrain, especially when viewed from the air. Tertiary basalt is mined here, which is used in a variety of ways: as an aggregate for asphalt and concrete, ballast for railway tracks, rock flour as fertiliser, basalt micrograins for mortar and the ceramics industry, and as a sandblasting material.
In the past, the Hühnerberg was once 362 meters high, today it measures 289 meters at the upper edge of the opencast mine, while the floor is 90 meters lower. Although the area has been a nature reserve for years, the opencast mine may continue to operate under certain conditions.
Enjoy the impressive panoramic view from the viewpoint and discover the Siebengebirge from a new perspective.
