Otterndorf
Immerse yourself in the world of Johann Heinrich Voß
The house is the birthplace of the translation of the "Odyssey" by the poet Johann Heinrich Voß (1751-1826), which is still current today. The former rector's house, where Johann Heinrich Voß lived with his family from 1778 to 1782, was opened to the public in 1999 after extensive restoration work.
The exhibition shows Johann Heinrich Voß as a poet, editor and translator, controversial publicist, friend and private person. An audio and a multimedia station provide insight into the life and work of Voß. The German poet and translator Johann Heinrich Voß spent a short period of his eventful life as a teacher in Otterndorf. During these years, he translated Homer's "Odyssey" in a memorable manner and figurative language, allowing generations of German readers to engage with the work.
The Johann Heinrich Voß Museum has been prudently modernized in recent years. A listening station invites visitors to linger longer and listen more closely to the translation of the Odyssey, for example. The team of the Voß-Haus is looking forward to your visit.
