Stroll through the old town
Picturesque alleys & facades, rustic wine taverns & pubs: As the oldest district of Constance, the Niederburg invites you to take relaxing walks and eventful shopping tours through the historic old town.
The lower castle begins north of the cathedral. The name of the district is due to its location below the former bishop's residence facing the Rhine. The numerous frescoes and handsome patrician houses lay a special charm over this district and invite you to immerse yourself in a bygone era.
Even though some of the buildings were destroyed in a town fire in 1355, there are still numerous houses from the late Middle Ages in the Niederburg. This district used to be inhabited by craftsmen, fishermen and small merchants, among whom were also serfs of the bishop. But there are also a number of stately houses that used to belong to wealthy canons in the Niederburg. With the Zoffingen Monastery, the district is home to the only still existing monastery in the former episcopal city. The hospital waiter's shop with storage and sales rooms is also located in the Niederburg.
