Geschichtsträchtiger Zufallsfund
Die Sonderhäuser Mikwe wurde 1996 bei archäologischen Grabungen im Vorfeld der Erschließung des Postplatzes für den Bau eines Einkaufszentrums als Zufallsfund entdeckt. Sie grenzt direkt an die Reste der mittelalterlichen Stadtmauer an und wird durch den nahen Fluss Bebra mit Wasser gespeist. Die Mikwe ist eines der ältesten erhaltenen, jüdischen Ritualbäder im mittel- und norddeutschen Raum und wird mit der mittelalterlichen jüdischen Bevölkerung der Stadt Sondershausen in Verbindung gebracht. Mit den Judenpogromen im Jahr 1349, durch die auch die Sondershäuser Juden getötet oder vertrieben wurden, verfiel sie und geriet lange in Vergessenheit.
Das Schlossmuseum verwaltet Besucheranfragen und zeigt neben der Mikwe auch eine kleine Ausstellung zum jüdischen Leben und der späteren Synagogengemeinde in Sondershausen.
