Obszar nizinny obejmuje wrzosowisko Krempeler, przyległe Mötjenpolder i Mötjensee oraz dawne jezioro Steller See, a także obszary pomiędzy nimi. Oba jeziora są dawnymi jeziorami plażowymi, które od tego czasu zamuliły się lub są w trakcie, które powstało między dawną mierzeją na zachodzie a grzbietem Geest na wschodzie. Rezerwat przyrody ma ogromne znaczenie dla ptaków łąkowych i wędrownych. Występują tu m.in. jastrząb, gęś gęgawa, rycyk, czajka, trzciniak i skowronek. Ptaki odpoczywające to kulik wielki, łabędź krzykliwy i gęś pąklowa. Bocian biały odwiedza ten teren jako gość żerujący. Cały kompleks jest siedliskiem żaby moczarowej i innych.
